Introduction
Department of Materials Science and Engineering (http://www.mse.umd.edu<http://www.mse.umd.edu0/>) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) in Gaithersburg, MD is seeking candidates for a Faculty Assistant position with neutron spin filter team (NSF) at the NCNR.

Description of Institution
Founded in 1856, University of Maryland, College Park is the flagship institution in the University System of Maryland. Our 1,250-acre College Park campus is just minutes away from Washington, D.C., and the nexus of the nation's legislative, executive, and judicial centers of power. This unique proximity to business and technology leaders, federal departments and agencies, and a myriad of research entities, embassies, think tanks, cultural centers, and non-profit organizations is simply unparalleled. Synergistic opportunities for our faculty and students abound and are virtually limitless in the nation's capital and surrounding areas. The University is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding and diverse faculty and staff that will enhance our stature of preeminence in our three missions of teaching, scholarship, and full engagement in our community, the state of Maryland, and in the world .

Job description
The neutron spin filter team develops and provides neutron polarizers and analyzers based on polarized 3He gas at instrument beam lines for neutron scattering research at the 20 MW research reactor located at NIST (see www.ncnr.nist.gov<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov>). NSF development and operation involves high vacuum techniques, laser optical pumping, nuclear magnetic and electron paramagnetic resonance, magnetic field design, and polarized neutron instrumentation. Applications of NSF include a variety of areas, such as nanoscale magnetism, and magnetic properties of hard-condensed matter, and soft matter. The use of NSF is rapidly increasing at neutron laboratories worldwide, and the NCNR is a leader in this area. The position is full time and involves operating and maintaining the wide variety of scientific instrumentation associated with 3He neutron spin filters and assisting the scientific community who use 3He NSF. The particular responsibilities of this position include providing 3He NSF for beam line use; interacting with instrument scientists and users to implement NSF effectively; maintaining electrical, mechanical, and computer hardware and equipment; developing and maintaining laser optical pumping systems; and a willingness to acquire new technical skills such as mechanical manufacturing, working with glass, CAD software, computer programming, and laser optical system design.

Requested Profile
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, materials science or other related areas is required. This position is a cooperative position between the University of Maryland and NIST. The successful applicant will be a University of Maryland employee stationed at the NIST Center for Neutron Research.
