[Neutron] Job Posting: Sample Environment Associate

The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) in Gaithersburg, MD in conjunction with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland is seeking an associate to operate and maintain sample environment equipment for neutron scattering research. The NCNR is a national user facility that develops and makes available to the general scientific community advanced neutron instrumentation. The role of sample environment staff is to enable users of the NCNR to perform scattering experiments subjecting their samples to extreme temperatures, pressures, and fields.

The applicant will be primarily responsible for preparing, operating and maintaining a range of sample equipment and working with users during the course of neutron scattering experiment. A minimum of 2 years of experience with one or more of the following types of equipment is required: high pressure cells, furnaces, gas loading systems and complementary equipment such as cryostats and closed-cycle refrigerators.

Other duties will include instructing non-experts in correct techniques and safe operation of equipment, troubleshooting electronics and software problems.

The position is full time and requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or physics. Successful candidates must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication, organizational and mechanical skills, as well as proficiency with general computing environments. They must be able to work effectively in a team as well as efficiently perform assigned independent tasks.

This position is a cooperative position between the University of Maryland and NIST. The successful applicant will be a University of Maryland employee stationed at the NIST Center for Neutron Research. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
