The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron
irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.

The Research Accelerator Division (RAD) within NScD invites applications for a post-doctoral research associate position in
its Superconducting Linac (SCL) Systems Group. The SNS SCL is the first accelerator that uses superconducting
radio-frequency (SRF) technology for a pulsed proton machine and is now considered to be the world's leading high-power
SCL proton accelerator facility. In order to ensure on-going success in the operation, maintenance, and improvement of the
SCL, the SNS has been developing an R&D program in SRF and SCL science and technology.
This R&D program aims at improving SRF cavity and cryomodule performance and better understand SCL operation.
Research emphasis will be on SRF surface sciences, interactions between plasma and SRF surfaces, innovative cavity
processing techniques, global optimization of all SCL systems parameters and related program/software. The
superconducting linac includes various sub-systems such as high-power RF system, LLRF control system, cryogenic system,
and dedicated diagnostic system. The successful candidate should have a strong interest in SRF and SCL systems, and be
capable of innovative and independent research.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
Participate in the deployment of plasma processing technique to the SNS accelerator to increase linac beam energy
- Assist in the design and operation of hardware and software related to plasma processing
- Investigate innovative methods to better understand and test the performance and limitations of SRF material, cavities and
- Use and maintain instruments related to SRF research (miniSIMS, scanning kelvin probe, laser spectroscopy etc.)
- Participates in scientific conferences, workshops, meetings and publishes results in the form of SNS technical notes and
memos, workshop and conference proceedings, and scientific journals.
-Ensures compliance with ESH and quality procedures and programs. May participate in the development and
communication of safety and quality procedures
-Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics.
- Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of
time, extensive work at chemical laboratories, and possible exposure to ionizing radiation normally associated with operation
of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research.

Qualifications Required
Successful candidates with a recent Ph.D degree in physics, engineering physics, related technical fields will be considered.
The date of application must be within 5 years of the most recent degree, and all degree requirements must be complete
before starting the appointment. Certain exceptions may be considered. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment of
24 months.

Excellent written and oral communications skills are required along with the desire to work in a team environment on
scientifically challenging problems. Acquiring knowledge of related safety issues, regulations, and safe practices will be
required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and
must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

Qualifications Desired:
Experience with SCL systems and SRF systems is highly desirable. Familiarity with accelerator systems and/or other
complex system/facility is also desired. Ability to work with a team of scientists, engineers, technicians and trades/crafts is
desired. Combination of skills in experimental, theoretical and computing physics related to SRF research is desired.
Experiences with surface science instruments (e.g. SIMS and lasers) and research methods are preferred.

Work Directions and Interfaces
Reports to the SCL Systems Group Physicist.
- Takes direction from the Superconducting Linac Systems Group Leader and Engineering staffs.
- Keeps strong commitment to team environment dynamics.

Measures of Effectiveness
Success in the fulfillment of all major duties and responsibility.
-Success as measured by the ORNL Employee Performance Management process.
-Safe execution of all responsibilities in accordance with ORNL ES&H requirements.
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or
