<h4><span lang="EN-US">Instrument Scientist for ESTIA<o:p></o:p></span></h4>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) invites applications for an instrument scientist for the ESTIA reflectometer.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><strong><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Description of Division</span></strong><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The Neutron Instruments Division houses the instrument scientists and post-docs, responsible for designing, constructing and then operating the neutron instruments of the ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are in
the process of being implemented, optimized to take full advantage of the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. There are currently 15 instruments under construction for ESS, of which 8, including ESTIA, will come on-line first.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><strong><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Description Main Responsibilities</span></strong><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The current position is for the lead instrument scientist for ESTIA, a polarised focusing reflectometer for small samples, designed for the investigation of chemical and magnetic depth profiles near surfaces, as well as lateral correlations
and structures. The immediate mission is to act as the project lead to design, procure, install and commission the ESTIA reflectometer. The instrument scientist will work closely with the lead engineer, forming the core instrument team. It is expected that
the instrument project will run until 2022, followed by commissioning and operations, at which stage the mission will be to operate the instrument within the ESS user programme.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">ESTIA is being built as an in-kind contribution from the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), near Villigen in Switzerland. The successful candidate will be based in Lund when the instrument starts installation in ESS in 2021. Frequent travel
between PSI and ESS will be required throughout the instrument construction project.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The successful candidate must be active in a scientific field of direct relevance to ESTIA, such as thin-film magnetism. He/she will be given the opportunity to develop their own research projects, preferably at operating neutron research
centres. Synergies with the neighbouring MAX-IV synchrotron as well as strong links with universities will be encouraged. ESS will support and encourage the candidate to take up an adjunct position at a university in an ESS partner country, in order to facilitate
their own research.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><strong><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Required qualifications:</span></strong><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">Essential qualifications and experience:<o:p></o:p></span></p>
