Power Electronics Electrical Engineer
The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for an Power Electronics Electrical Engineer. With the world's highest flux reactor-based neutron source (the High Flux Isotope Reactor) and the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL has become the world's foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities will encompass the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world. To design, develop, prototype, test, analyze, and document a variety of power electronics systems and components for the Spallation Neutron Source High Voltage Converter Modulator. Responsible for design oversight, testing, commissioning, and analysis of these systems in conjunction with other engineers and technicians. Provides technical and administrative support during system commissioning and participates in future R&D activities.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Analyzes a variety of engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and other simulation techniques, including tools such as PSpice, Simplorer, MathCAD, and finite element analysis programs. Develops and/or specifies deployable designs based on engineering analysis.
Working with members of the Electrical Systems Group, performs failure analysis and studies mean time to repair data on electrical systems to propose reliability upgrades.
Develops, reviews, and validates project design concepts.
Produces accurate and concise technical reports, design documentation, and interface documentation.
Prepares presentations for and responses to recommendations from technical design reviews and advisory committees.
Participates in R&D and prototyping of technical equipment.
Proactively identifies and ensures timely resolution of critical issues.
Accurately and reliably communicates technical status and performance to ORNL management.
Reviews and assists line management in the production of design requirement documents.
As appropriate, interfaces and interacts with vendors and/or subcontractors. Some domestic and/or foreign travel may be required.
As appropriate, publishes and represents SNS at conferences and/or workshops. Some domestic and/or foreign travel may be required to support collaborations or attend conferences or workshops.
Ensures compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.
May supervise, direct or train technicians and craft workers.
Qualifications Required: BS in electrical engineering (MS/PhD preferred) and a minimum of 5 years experience in design and analysis of complex engineering problems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a sound understanding of power electronics, electromagnetic fields, high power semiconductor devices, and pulsed power systems and have the ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems. Prior experience working in a particle accelerator or pulsed power/power electronics field desired. Knowledge of high power RF systems and Field Programmable Gate Arrays desirable. Some knowledge of printed circuit board design programs desirable. Excellent communication skills, ability to work individually or as part of a team and lead from knowledge and experience are essential.
