<>Post-doc Self-healing of cracks by nanoscale precipitation
Delft University of Technology, Radiation, Radionuclides & Reactors
department

Job description
Research of the section Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energy
currently focuses on three main
issues: (1) energy storage and conversion materials, relevant for the
development of a sustainable energy
economy, such as high power lithium-ion batteries, hydrogen storage
materials, solar cell materials and
fuel cell materials, (2) advanced construction materials, concentrating
on the microscopic processes
involved in optimising high-performance metal alloys and (3) materials
for (opto-)electronics applications,
focusing on the development and advanced characterisation of new
materials (bulk and thin films) for
improved opto-electronic devices, including solar cells.
Self-healing is a new concept for structural materials. It has recently
been recognised that a healing
mechanism can be built into structural materials in some cases to repair
damage that accumulates
during operation in-situ. The goal of the current research project is to
achieve self healing of ultra-fine
cracks in steels by the formation of nanoscale precipitates at the crack
surface to significantly enhance
the lifetime of components in operation. This precipitation mechanism
requires the presence of
supersaturated mobile solute atoms in the steel with an affinity to form
nanoscale precipitates at a
crack surface. In order to identify the mechanism responsible for
self-healing on a fundamental level,
the intention is to study model alloys with neutrons, X rays, and
positron techniques (both in-house
and international facilities) in combination with thermal and mechanical
treatments. The nanoscale
precipitates will be characterised predominantly by small-angle
scattering (neutrons and X-rays)
and positron lifetime experiments during self-healing. The project is
part of a newly-started national
programme on self-healing materials and is closely related to the
research activities on self-healing
materials at the Delft University of Technology. <>

Requirements
The candidate should have a doctorate and experience in the field of
advanced radiation techniques
and/or materials science. A background in physics, chemistry or
materials science is desirable.
Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organisation; a good
command of English (written and
oral) is essential, while a good command of Dutch is also preferred. <>

Organization
Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences,
<>Radiation, Radionuclides & Reactors department

Delft University of Technology is a multifaceted institution that offers
education and conducts research
within the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level.
Education, research and designs are
strongly oriented towards social applicability. TU Delft develops
technologies for future generations,
focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft,
you will work in an environment
in which technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft is comprised
of eight faculties, the
Assistant Staff Office, unique laboratories, research institutes and
schools.

<>Faculty of Applied Sciences is a large, research-oriented faculty
providing excellent, challenging
education and conducting pioneering, cutting-edge fundamental research
of great societal relevance
in the natural sciences. It provides a world-class training ground for
future leaders in scientific
professional practice and research. With more than 60 different
nationalities studying and working
together, its environment is enriched and culturally diverse.

The department of Radiation, Radionuclides & Reactors
(www.rrr.tudelft.nl) is housed in the
Reactor Institute Delft (RID). Binding elements for the department are
nuclear radiation and reactions.
Although its areas of interest are varied, whether they be materials,
sensors and instrumentation, energy
and sustainable production or health, all its research is related to
radiation in some way. In experimental
research, extensive use is made of the research facilities of the
Reactor Institute Delft as well as of large,
international research facilities. The close collaboration with the RID
guarantees access to the reactor and
the irradiation facilities, as well as to the associated experimental
facilities, and has also resulted in three
centres of knowledge: the Positron Centre, the Neutron Centre and the
Luminescence Centre.
The confluence of this knowledge makes its research unique at a
national, and - partly - an
international level. For more information about the department please
visit http://www.rrr.tudelft.nl/fame.
