INRIM-UNIPV NAA laboratory

The INRIM-UNIPV NAA laboratory of Pavia is located in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Pavia and close to the Laboratorio Energia Nucleare Applicata (LENA), the research center of the University of Pavia operating a 250 kW TRIGA Mark II nuclear reactor.
Scientists from the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM) and from the University of Pavia joined to form the NAA group and collaborate in the development and use of methods based on neutron activation and gamma spectrometry.
The group has a long experience in performing elemental analysis in a variety of sample matrices, including successful participations to Key Comparisons and pilot studies organized by the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance: Metrology in Chemistry and Biology (CCQM).
At present, the main application fields and the related activities are:

  1. Laboratory Medicine (contact person: G. D’Agostino, g.dagostino@inrim.it). Analysis of trace elements in human body tissues as indicators of pathological conditions, e.g. in hair of patients after metal-on-metal resurfacing arthroplasty (national collaboration with the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Bologna) and in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
  2. Food Chemistry (contact person: L. Bergamaschi, l.bergamaschi@inrim.it). Analysis of major and trace elements in food, raw materials, feedstuffs, for characterization, provenance and adulteration studies.
  3. Archaeometry (contact person: M. Oddone, massimo.oddone@unipv.it). Studies of provenance of archeological materials (e.g. pottery, marble, obsidian).
  • Location: Pavia, Italy
