Neutron Depth Profiling (NDP) is a non-destructive, near-surface, nuclear analytical technique which probes depth concentration profiles of certain nuclides. At the N4DP instrument at the PGAA facility of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany, NDP measurements can be simultaneously obtained together with complementary Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) measurements. Hereby, not only the depth concentration profile of certain isotopes (3He, 6Li, 10B, …) at the near surface can be obtained but also the bulk composition is investigated. The maximum neutron flux of 2×1010cm-2s-1 enables detecting changes in depth profiles as well as in the material composition with a high time resolution. A variable gas atmosphere as well as a fully customizable sample holding structure enables its application to various research branches as manufacture quality control, fundamental nuclear physics, materials science and engineering, energy systems, medicine.
