Prof. Andreas Schreyer, The Director of Science at ESS visited the JEEP II-reactor at Kjeller, Norway on January the 23rd. Prof. Schreyer underlined the importance of the JEEP II-reactor. “The JEEP II-reactor produces neutrons, which we need” said Prof. Schreyer. “IFE and the JEEP II-rector are important. The Institute develops instruments which are vital to the ESS. IFE is a recognized partner and we look forward to a long lasting cooperation”.

The Director of Science seemed pleased as he was shown the reactor and it`s facilities. Prof. Schreyer was visiting IFE in conjunction with a seminar on the possibilities with neutrons at the European Spallation Source and the upgrade of instrumentation at the JEEP II-reactor

Extensive participation from many institutions

The seminar was financed by the Research Council of Norway and IFE as host. All together 61 representatives from 20 different scientific institutions and from six countries participated. In his presentation Prof. Schreyer pointed out the great advantages that will open up to the scientific community when the ESS will start to operate in 2023. “It will be the most powerful neutron source in the world and give the scientist information that is not possible the get by any other method”, Prof. Schreyer stated. As an example, Prof. Schreyer pointed to the fact that neutrons make it possible to “see” hydrogen in atomic structures. “Neutron scattering can be very useful in developing improved fuel cells and batteries and in the future production of electric vehicles”, according to The Director of Science at ESS.

A bright future for the JEEP II- research-reactor

The department head for neutron materials characterization at IFE, Prof Bjørn Hauback was very pleased with the seminar. “The great participation and the committed discussions during the seminar makes me very optimistic on behalf of the Institute and the future of the JEEP II-reactor. The ESS will be a beacon of science in Europe and I am very proud that we can be a part of it”, Prof. Hauback said. Aase Marie Hundere, from the Research Council of Norway, informed the participants that there are several programs of the Council that can finance neutron research and participation with the ESS.

As far back as 2009, IFE signed a MoU with the ESS. The Institute is now strongly involved in design of two of the instruments that will be installed at ESS and with a test beamline in JEEP II. In addition IFE is also supplying ESS with technology for their control rooms. So the relations are very much in place with, what will probably be, the most important scientific community in Europe.
